Pieces of us

I decided to tell a story by painting a picture.

I will start with a pencil and outline our friendship

Because that is where it all started.

I remember the day I got a WhatsApp message from a strange number

Being the direct person that I am my response was

“Who is this and where did you get my number?”

Despite my response that day I won a friend for life.

We got talking and acquainted ourselves.

Discovering each other made this journey fun.

Our love for music enabled us to communicate at a higher level.

Even in our long silent calls, we said more than we could ever say with words.

Many people would find the silence awkward

But it is in that silence that we find ourselves connecting.

As I hold my paintbrush

I decided that I will start with a tone of blue

That symbolizes patience

We both know that I am not the easiest person to connect with

Even so, you have been patient with me.

You took time to break down the walls I had built

Removing one brick at a time.

A smear of yellow to represent survival through the test of time.

I better than anybody knows the rough times we had

And I am to blame for all the bumpy roads.

We have travelled this road so long

And time has been a great teacher.

It has taught us to smile through the pain,

Fight against all odds and to adjust.

Red will represent our disconnect.

To leave this part of our story out would make it a perfect picture

But we are not picture perfect.

Several times I drove you away because of my brokenness.

Whenever I felt that you had taken down too many bricks

I would run away and try to hide my flaws.

Somehow you always seemed to find your way back into my life

And we would take things from where we left off.

This was meant to be a poem

But our picture cannot be painted in a canvas of four stanzas

So I guess we will make this a short story.

Flip the page and you will see light strikes of purple,

 That represent perseverance

Without it, we would not be where we are.

With all the changes we have been through

Many relationshipw wouldn't survive.

We have grown together even when we were apart.

This friendship has matured to an age where it does not have a name.

We are not just friends but we are also not lovers.

Oops that black was a mistake

But that’s exactly how this works.

We make mistakes but nothing that a little white can’t fix.

In our imperfect picture white represents ‘desire’

Because peace is not constant.

But desire is what drives us to make our story work.

With you, I can be myself because you know me inside out.

There is no need for masks.

No need to pretend.

Before the story gets too long I will put my brush down.

Our picture is incomplete but we still have a long way to go.

We are still busy with character development.

As we read our story we realize that nothing is certain.

We keep Changing so we need to keep getting to know each other.

That’s okay because uncovering (undressing) each other is the fuel to our No Name.

Based on a true story.
